US Navy To Honor Late Gay Icon Harvey Milk

It is being reported by several news outlets, that the US Navy will name a vessel in honor of the late Harvey Milk. Many in our generation are familiar with Milk by way of the film of the same name (MILK) starring Sean Penn and James Franco.

The gay rights activist served in the US Navy long before he was elected to public office in San Francisco.  Milk was the first openly gay man elected to office in a major US city.  As an openly gay man he endured harassment and death threats.  Sadly, he was assassinated in 1978.  He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2009.

A ship in his honor is a bold and necessary move in showing the progression of gay rights in this nation.
